Turning Surplus into Sustenance: Supporting EAGFP’s Mission to Fight Hunger in Kenya

As one of the largest, independent fresh produce businesses in the UK and Europe, we know that fresh produce has the power to do more than just feed—it can fuel communities, help restore dignity and change the lives of the most vulnerable in society. That’s why we’re proud to support the work of our long-standing partners, East African Growers Fresh Produce (EAGFP), who are making a real difference in Kenya by tackling hunger and food waste head-on.

Through their partnership with Food Banking Kenya (FBK), EAGFP is helping to ensure that surplus fruit and veg doesn’t go to waste but instead goes where it’s needed most—on the plates of children, families, and vulnerable groups across the country.

A Real Impact, One Meal at a Time

Between January and November 2024, EAGFP donated over 264,000kg of surplus fresh produce, from broccoli and baby corn to fine beans, leeks, and beetroots.

But it’s not just food; while the EAGFP has also helped to provide over 1.15 million meals to those in need, they’ve also prevented over 261,000 kg of carbon emissions from being released.

This donated produce has gone on to support those who need it the most, including:

  • School feeding programmes in Nakuru, Nairobi, Kiambu and Kajiado, helping children stay nourished and focused in the classroom.

  • Soup kitchens serving hot meals to families in Githogoro, Korogocho, and Kahawa Soweto, where food insecurity is part of daily life.

  • Cancer patients and survivors at the Lady Hope Wellness Centre, receiving nutrient-rich meals to help support their recovery.

  • Elderly residents in Kayole, and street-rescued boys at the Voice of Hope Centre, now have access to food that fuels not just bodies, but futures.

  • And individuals experiencing homelessness at the Mercy Foundation, where a nourishing meal can make all the difference to those who are homeless.

Why This Matters to MWW

Food waste is a global challenge—but it’s also a global opportunity. Here at MWW, we’re committed to sourcing our produce responsibly, and that includes making sure good food finds a good home. Supporting EAGFP and their work with FBK is part of our wider mission to create a fairer, more sustainable food system that leaves no one behind and ensures nothing goes to waste.

Shared Values, Shared Vision

One reason we love working with EAGFP is that they see the bigger picture, just like we do. Together, we’re proving that the supply chain isn’t just about getting produce from field to fork—it’s about connecting people, reducing waste, and using food as a force for good.

Looking Ahead

However, the hard work doesn’t stop here. As EAGFP continues its incredible donation programme, we’ll be right alongside them. Because when it comes to making a difference, every kilo counts. Every meal matters. And every act of generosity leaves a lasting impact.
