From green produce to green energy: MWW secures 100% renewable energy for Midlands site

We’re delighted to announce that we’ve taken a significant step forward in our net zero journey, joining forces with Smartest Energy to bring 100% renewable energy to MWW’s Altitude site in the Midlands.

This transition marks a meaningful shift in how MWW powers its operations, aligning energy procurement with its broader environmental commitments and long-term sustainability strategy.

The renewable energy contract, which was backed by Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), will start on 1st November 2026. Read more about it below…

An important step in our net zero journey

Altitude’s annual energy usage is 2.87 million kWh. Based on current UK grid carbon intensity factors, this transition will enable us to reduce our carbon footprint by 580 tonnes annually – the equivalent of taking 250 petrol cars off the road in a year.

This will transform how we power our operations from 2026 and beyond. We’ve long held ambitions of becoming a net zero company and this is a monumental step on our journey to transforming MWW’s operations across the board.

Parveen Mehta, our Operations Director, said: “This project shows that doing the right thing for the environment doesn't have to come at a premium. By switching to REGO-certified power, we've secured a greener energy supply at an economical price – delivering real value to the business while honouring our commitment to sustainability.”

Long-term sustainability goals

The switch to Smartest Energy is part of a wider, coordinated approach to sustainability across MWW’s operations in 2026/27. Alongside renewable energy procurement, we’re actively investing in:

  • On-site solar energy generation

  • Efficient refrigeration systems and processes

  • Upgrading LED lighting across facilities

  • Advanced energy management via building management systems

Together, these initiatives are designed to optimise energy efficiency, reduce operational emissions, and future-proof the business against rising energy and regulatory pressures.

Collaboration is key to success

This milestone couldn’t have been reached without the strength of our partnerships. We worked closely with Nersi Salehi at Pro Enviro and Jonathan Powell at The True Group to structure a contract that met both sustainability and commercial requirements.

Their expertise in energy procurement and sustainability advisory was instrumental in delivering a solution that balances environmental impact with business value – and MWW is grateful for their guidance throughout the process.

By partnering with Smartest Energy and working alongside trusted advisors to adopt REGO-backed energy, MWW has demonstrated how collaboration can unlock both environmental and commercial benefits.

This milestone is part of our mission to not only respond to the challenges of climate change, but actively shape a more sustainable future for the fresh produce industry, partners and most importantly our local communities.
