Top Barn

The sun is always shining at Top Barn

Our Top Barn Packhouse plays an important role in our fresh-produce operations. With over 21% of greenhouse gas emissions coming from food production, it is a key focus for our efforts to use energy more efficiently, strengthen operational resilience, and reduce our environmental impact across our UK and overseas sites.

This year we've already joined forces with Smartest Energy to bring 100% renewable energy to our Altitude site in the Midlands, and now we're turning our attention to our Top Barn packhouse. With the help of Pro Enviro, we've recently added a new rooftop solar installation, building on the existing solar facility at the site. This new system adds 118.72kWp of generating capacity and is expected to produce around 97,563 kWh of electricity a year. The new installation means we can generate more power and get closer to a future where the site runs entirely on energy generated on site.

This investment in renewable energy will enable us to manage energy costs in a time of unstable energy markets and reduce our reliance on the National Grid. It will also allow us to save around 22 tonnes of CO₂e a year and help us to continue to reduce our carbon impact.

Increasing the solar capacity of our Top Barn site is just one part of our ongoing green energy journey; we've already started the switch over to a REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) electricity supply, with our Altitude site going live 1st November.

But a solar facility and a REGO-backed energy supply is just the start; we're continuing to reinvest in our operations in ways that will support commercial resilience and contribute to a lower-carbon supply chain.
