How MWW delivered a bumper squash season despite challenging growing conditions
As leaves fall and temperatures drop, demand for squash rises. Yet this year’s summer heatwaves created challenging growing conditions across several crops. Despite this, squash has been a standout success.
Decades of growing expertise and forward planning helped us select the right varieties and maintain quality and choice for customers.
Carefully managed precision irrigation delivered water where it was needed, using supplies held in the farm’s winter storage reservoir, an especially valuable resource during this year’s dry season.
Although a couple of varieties produced lower yields, overall yields and fruit sizing have been strong. Drier harvesting conditions also meant cleaner fruit, reducing preparation before packing, and improving efficiency. With harvest still underway, we’re on track to produce 1.5 million squash this season.
Investment in varieties chosen for appearance, eating quality and shelf life has created a strong, varied range for existing customers and new market opportunities.
The results reflect the dedication and adaptability of the MWW Farms growing team, who delivered a successful crop despite the summers pressures.
Looking ahead to 2027, we will build on this experience to offer customers even greater quality, consistency, and choice.
